“This space is dedicated to strengthening the spirits of all who enter,” said GEGAC CEO Kenton Winsley at the community reopening of our newly refurbished Elders’ Lounge last month.
Officially known as the Elders and Independent Living Services building, the facility was closed for much of 2024 as it underwent a thorough renovation.
Uncle Harry Stewart, and Chair of GEGAC’s Board of Directors Jeffrey Cooper, welcomed Elders and community to the new space, which has been thoughtfully updated to better to serve the needs of our Elders and community.
“As we stand in this beautifully transformed space, let us recognise its profound purpose: this is a place of healing and learning,” Kenton said.
“It is designed not only with the physical needs of our community in mind but also with the spiritual and cultural nourishment that sustains us all.”
“This building will be a vibrant hub where our Elders’ wisdom meets the curiosity and energy of our young people.”
“Here, we will pass on the richness of our culture and language, ensuring our traditions thrive and evolve with each new generation.”
“Let us use this space together to forge a future that honours our past and embraces our potential.”
It was fitting that the reopening was held shortly before International Day of Older Persons, the theme of which this year was “Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide.”
