Addressing Root Causes a Key to Housing Solutions

At our most recent community meeting we received a number of questions from community about housing.

Here’s our responses to those questions.

Does the GEGAC Board of Directors have a direction on assisting men (with supported accommodation) who may have been kicked out of accommodation due to an Intervention Order?

The Board of Directors recognises that we are in a housing crisis, and that supporting anyone at risk of homelessness, including men affected by intervention orders, is of utmost importance.

GEGAC is committed to ensuring that those facing housing instability have the support and resources they need.

However, we believe that prevention is the most effective strategy in addressing homelessness and family violence.

Preventing homelessness and family violence starts with early intervention, education, and the development of culturally appropriate programs that address underlying issues before they escalate.

By focusing on prevention, we aim to help men and their families build stronger, healthier relationships and reduce the risk of violence, eviction, or homelessness.

Culturally safe housing initiatives, combined with programs that address the root causes of family conflict, are essential to keeping families together and preventing individuals from becoming homeless in the first place.

GEGAC is committed to working closely with the community, service providers, and government partners to create long-term solutions that address immediate housing needs and the broader factors contributing to homelessness.

Using Culture and connection as a foundation for healing and support, we strive to prevent crises before they occur, ensuring everyone in our community has access to safe and stable housing.

What is the Direction on Housing?

GEGAC acknowledges we are facing a significant housing crisis, and addressing housing needs within our community is a top priority.

Safe and secure housing is fundamental to the well-being of individuals, families, and the community.

GEGAC is committed to developing housing solutions that are culturally safe, community-driven, and aligned with our people’s values and traditions.

Our housing initiatives will prioritise vulnerable groups, ensuring that families and individuals at risk of homelessness or housing instability have access to stable, supported accommodation.

However, we believe that prevention is critical—by addressing the root causes of housing instability, such as family violence, financial stress, and substance misuse, we aim to prevent people from reaching a crisis point.

GEGAC works with community partners and government agencies to create sustainable, long-term housing solutions.

These efforts include building culturally appropriate housing models that foster a connection to Country and Culture while also addressing the practical needs of our people.

Our approach empowers individuals and families to access housing and thrive within a supportive and culturally enriching environment.

As we navigate this housing crisis, GEGAC remains committed to advocating for the resources and support necessary to provide our community with safe, secure, and stable housing.
