Basketweaving Workshops on Tuesdays at Dala Yooro

GEGAC continues to expand opportunities for cultural activities and education for our Boorai.

In partnership with Peppers Community, Arts and Cultural Services, GEGAC will host basketweaving workshops for girls aged 5 – 17 after school between now and the end of the year.

The basketweaving workshops will be held at the Dala Yooro Building’s Cultural Room on Tuesdays between 3:30 and 4:30pm on the following dates:

  • October 29
  • November 19
  • November 26
  • December 3
  • December 10

Anyone interested in the basketweaving workshops should RSVP at the bottom of this page, so Alice Ann has an idea of numbers.

Early Years Cultural Manager Alana Solomon said GEGAC was focused on making Aboriginal culture a more visible and vibrant part of everything that happens across the organisation.

“GEGAC must be a place that always represents and reflects our culture, and is a place that is always culturally appropriate and safe for mob,” she said. “The goal is to make GEGAC distinct and different from mainstream health services in every way – from the sights and sounds you see and hear around our place, to the way we engage community, the way we celebrate community, and the spaces we create for mob to heal and be healthy.”

“It’s really important that this focus on culture also includes education for our Boorai, to make sure these kinds of cultural practices stay alive and are passed on from generation to generation.”

During the basketweaving sessions, our Healthy Lifestyles Team will also drop by to have yarns with the girls about making healthy choices, and about things like healthy foods, sleeping, and the importance of getting outside and being active.
