Community Breakfast: A Moment for Mob to Come Together

Here at GEGAC, we acknowledge that January 26 is a day that means very different things for different people, depending on their culture, life experiences, and personal or family history.

However, we are first and foremost an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation, and our principal obligation is to the people of this community.

The needs, hopes, and ambitions of local Aboriginal people are our guiding light.

That is why this year, on January 26, we are hosting a community breakfast and gathering on the oval at the front of GEGAC.

Our hope is to create a safe and welcoming space for mob to come together, to have a feed, share a yarn, and foster a sense of unity and community.

There will be no agenda or formal events planned for the morning, just a place for mob to catch up, enjoy a bacon and egg roll, and spend some time together.

All GEGAC staff have been given the option to take the public holiday off, or to work the day and take the time off on another day in the coming weeks. What staff choose to do is completely voluntary.

We see our approach this year as one step on a continuing journey around January 26, a journey that will continue to be guided by the local Aboriginal people we serve.

As promised, we will continue to seek the suggestions of our Board, staff, and community. What we can do in future years will reflect those voices and perspectives.

As with all times that may evoke trauma, sadness, or anger, we encourage everyone to prioritise self-care. Look after yourselves, and each other.

Try not to give your energy to hurtful or divisive opinions, but instead take time to reflect, recharge, and engage in activities that nourish your spirit.

Seek support from your families, friends, and colleagues. We hope to see you.
