Community Breakfast, January 27, a Moment for Mob to Come Together

Here at GEGAC we acknowledge that January 26 is a day that means very different things for different people, depending on their culture, life experiences, or personal and family history.

As an organisation that values greatly the contributions of both our Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff, we respect the right of all Australians to mark January 26 however feels appropriate to them, as long as it is done respectfully, peacefully thoughtfully, and with consideration for others.

Recognising the varied perspectives within our team and their families, GEGAC will be closed on January 26, aligning with national public holiday and employment standards.

However, we are first and foremost an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation, and our principal obligation is to the Aboriginal people of this community.

The needs, hopes and ambitions of local Aboriginal people are our guiding light.

Which is why this year we’re making a change to what we do around the January 26 public holiday, which this year falls on Monday, January 27.

We’re hosting a breakfast and gathering for all community on the oval at the front of GEGAC.

Our hope is that it creates a safe and welcoming space for mob to come together, have a feed and a yarn, and foster a sense of unity and community.

There will be no agenda or events planned for the morning – just a place for mob to catch up, enjoy a bacon and egg roll, and spend some time together.

All GEGAC staff have been given the option to take the public holiday off, or to work the day and take the time off another day in the coming weeks.

What staff choose to do is completely voluntary.

We see our approach this year as one step on a continuing journey around January 26, a journey that will be guided by the local Aboriginal people we serve.

As promised, we will continue to seek the suggestions of our board, staff and community regarding January 26, and what we are able to do in future years will reflect those suggestions.

As in all times that might evoke trauma, sadness or anger, we encourage everyone to prioritise self-care. Look after yourselves, and each other.

Try not to give your attention and energy to the hurtful and divisive opinions of others, but instead take the time to reflect, recharge, and engage in activities that nourish your spirit.

Seek support from your families, friends, and colleagues.

GEGAC staff will be here for you on Monday morning – we hope to see you.
