GEGAC wants to hear from community to get your suggestions about what GEGAC should do on January 26 each year.
As everyone knows, January 26 is a national public holiday, marking the landing of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788.
For some Australians it is a moment of celebration and pride.
For many in the Aboriginal community it is a moment of mourning, sadness and anger.
GEGAC was founded by, and for, Aboriginal people, and our growth and operation today relies on the contributions of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, Australians and people from overseas, people of all colours, cultures and backgrounds.
As such, we recognise and respect the various ways in which GEGAC staff and their families will mark, or not mark, January 26.
In the past, GEGAC has been closed on January 26 in alignment with national pubic holiday and employment standards.
In recent years there have been calls for GEGAC to mark the occasion differently, by hosting a community gathering of some sort, or to remain open and continue serving the community as normal.
There are a wide range of options for what GEGAC could do on January 26.
So we want to hear from you – what are your ideas for what GEGAC should do on January 26?
Please take 2 minutes to fill in this survey, below. It’s completely confidential, and you cannot be identified by your responses.
Your ideas will help us make a thoughtful and informed decision that properly represents community feeling.
