Mob Beat Cancer – Get a Free Breast Screen, May 13 to 17

GEGAC Aboriginal Health Worker Carmel Hood with artist Amanda Morgan, whose artwork adorns the free shawl that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women will receive when they get a breast screen at the BreastScreen Bus at GEGAC, May 13 – 17.

Did you know that breast cancer is the most common cancer among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women?

Luckily, survival rates are good as long as you get screened and they can catch it early.

GEGAC is hosting free, 10 minute breast screens in May thanks to a strong partnership we have with BreastScreen Victoria.

All week from Monday, May 13 to Friday, May 17 the BreastScreen Bus will be at GEGAC.

Breast screens will be done in a culturally safe environment with a female radiographer and will only take 10 minutes.

To book your breast screen appointment, or if you have any questions, call GEGAC now on 0421 719 805.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who get a breast screen will receive a beautiful shawl to use during the screening and to keep afterwards.

The artwork on this beautiful shawl was designed by talented Gunaikurnai artist, Amanda Morgan.

“The women in the circles are the ones who have breast cancer, the stars in the circles with them represent the loved ones and their Ancestors who have also been affected, and who also have gone before us,” Amanda tells us. “The women sitting around the circles are the ones who are coming in to support and get their breast checked too. The footprints represent all women coming together to get checked as well.”

To get a breast screen you must:

  • Be 40+ years of age
  • Have not had a breast screen (mammogram) in the past 12 months
  • Have not been diagnosed with breast cancer within the past 5 years
  • Not have any symptoms (e.g. lump, pain, or nipple discharge)
  • Not be pregnant or breast feeding

Breast screening is for asymptomatic people (no symptoms). If you do have symptoms as described above you should see a doctor.

Appointments are available Monday, May 13 to Friday, May 17.
