GEGAC staff Zac Stewart, Scott King and Peter Harrison are driving a number of efforts to involve more men in projects and activities around GEGAC and in community.
GEGAC is continuing to create more opportunities for men to be involved in making good things happening in community.
On Wednesday, May 21, we are hosting our first ever gathering especially for young fellas aged 14 – 24.
GEGAC’s Quaranook Youth Engagement Officer, Peter Harrison, is spearheading the Young Fellas Gathering, from 3 – 5pm on May 21.
Peter says he hopes the gathering provides a relaxed, no pressure environment for young men in community that might not otherwise feel connected to GEGAC.
“For this first gathering we’re just going to get some pizza for everyone, and have a yarn,” he says. “We want to hear from young blokes about what kind of things they are interested in, what ideas they might have.”
The Young Fellas Gathering will be from 3 – 5pm on Wednesday, May 21, at the Elders Lounge and the fire pit yarning circle out the back of the Medical Building.
Peter says he hopes young men from community will be able to drop by after school or any time they are able to make it, have a feed and just say g’day.
“Even if it’s just about getting together to have a feed and spend some time together, that’s very important too,” Peter says. “We’ll start small, and see what direction the group wants to take.”
The gathering for older men will be held right after, at 5pm.
GEGAC’s Quaranook Engagement Officer Scott King says he hopes some of the young blokes will be able to stay around for a bit, to see what the older fellas are working on and provide their thoughts and ideas.
“These gatherings are most powerful when you have many different voices from across different generations,” he says. “We will keep providing opportunities like this, because at the end of the day we want more men from community to walk through the door and realise they have the power to make good things happen around here.”
